we will be streaming the Christmas tree lecture by Donald Knuth, Stanford, tonight 12/8/2011 from 6:30-7:30PM at OC4611.

Professor Knuth will present his 17th Annual Christmas Tree Lecture on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 6:30 pm in NVIDIA Auditorium in the new Huang Engineering Center, 475 Via Ortega, Stanford University . For those unable to come to Stanford, the lecture will be broadcast online as a free webinar. Prepare to experience Professor Knuth's sense of humor and unique perspective on computer science.
"Formally speaking, a Bayesian network based on an n-node binary tree is a way of assigning probabilities to each state x of the entire tree, where x is an n-bit vector whose jth bit is the state of node j. The overall probability of state x is proportional to the product, over all pairs of nodes j and k with j the parent of k, of a given weight function that depends only on the current states of nodes j and k. This local weight function can be different at each pair of adjacent nodes. Standard methods of belief propagation are able to compute the global probability of simple events such as "node x is in state 0", without doing much work. But more complicated events, such as "the sum of all individual states is m", cannot be handled efficiently by traditional techniques. The speaker will explain how to apply elementary BDD technology so that the probability of such events (and many others) can be computed in polynomial time.

Just sending a reminder that we will hold our next meeting tomorrow from 2:15PM to 3:45PM. The Temescal room will be occupied this time, so we will hold the meeting at the club room of the Student Center Building.

Hello everyone,

We will hold meetings starting this Friday October 7 and every other Friday after that date from 2:15PM to 4PM in the Temescal room located inside the Student Center building of the Oceanside campus.

At the meetings please bring questions to ask, suggestions, math related material you find interesting.

For this month let us concentrate on preparation for the AMATYC contest which will be held October 14 through October 29. The contest can be taken once each semester and consists of questions that requires knowledge up to Precalculus, although you are not expected to be able to solve everything.

OK everyone, here are the dates for the AMATYC review sessions:

Both review sessions will be help by Prof. Perovic on the second floor of the library in room 1250.
The first will be tomorrow 2/28/11 from 4:00 to 5:00pm.
The second will be Wednesday 3/2/11 from 4:30 to 5:30pm.

If anyone is planning on taking the AMATYC test this semester make sure you do not miss these review sessions, they are going to be geat!

AMATYC Review Sessions

The AMATYC contest starts this monday, and it has been suggested to me by some club members that some study sessions would be nice to help students prepare for this years test. I am looking for some input from other club members as to when would be a good time to have some study sessions. Please leave a comment to let me know what times would be good. After I have reviewed the comments, I will let everyone know what time is best for all.

Meeting Time

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know that the trip to the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Math Conference did not happen, due to what appeared to be a lack of interest.

On a brighter note the annual MiraCosta Math and Science fair is coming up in April.
This Tuesday, in the little theater from 5 to 6pm, the Math, Physics and Engineering Clubs will be meeting, and the organizer of the fair will be there to talk about the fair and give some ideas on how to get involved. So anyone who is interested in doing something in the fair make sure you come by the meeting or let me know by leaving a comment.
Between the three clubs we are shooting for at least two booths at the fair.

Possible Field Trip

Hey everyone,

there is going to be a math event at Pepperdine University, called Pacific Cost Undergraduate Math Conference, on March 13 from 8:30 to 4:00. I think this would be a very interesting conference to attend, but unfortunately the deadline to register is this Friday.

Here is the link to the web site www.pcumc-math.org, so go check it out and see if this would be something you would like to go to. Time is of the essence, so please let me know if you would like to go by commenting to this post. We need to get about 7 to 10 people to commit to going before deciding to make the trip, so the sooner you let me know the better. If we do decide to go everyone will need to register at the web site given, but wait to register until I figure out if enough people are interested.

Hey everyone,
Things are starting out a little slow this semester, but there are some events coming up.
If you do not already know, the Math Club is working with the Physics and Engineering Club, to try to build the clubs up and increase membership. The Engineering Club has some field trips planned later in the semester, and the Physics Club has meetings every other Tuesday at 5pm in azlan A by the cafeteria. One of the meetings is tomorrow so go check it out, due to work I may only be able to stop by for a short time.

Live 3-D Animation!

Come see a demonstration of a 3-D video capture system OptiTrack. You can test out the system and “suit” for yourself! The system records movement at 100 frames per second, and creates a 3-D image which can be viewed form all sides.

This process is used by a number of athletic programs to advise them on issues involving motion with athletes and has even been used on Dancing with the Stars!

Visiting CalTech.

Today Math Club, accompanied by Zika Perovic - our adviser and professor of Mathematics at MiraCosta College - visited California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Even though the campus of CalTech is very small, students and faculty members kept us quite busy throughout the whole day. We visited lectures of Calculus and Discrete Math, had a lunch break with CalTech Math professor, two grad students showed us around the campus and in the end we had coffee with Math Club president of CalTech. It was quite a trip.
